It's pear season and this weekend I picked up a both the Bartlett and Bosc versions of this sweet, tender, juicy fruit. With a recipe from Whole Foods and the help of my friends Ben & Jerry, this warm dessert pairing was perfect.
2 or 3 ripe but firm pears, peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup seedless raisins
1/3 cup apple juice
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of ground nutmeg
1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
Put pears, raisins, juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a small pot and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, for about 10 minutes. Add vinegar, salt and pepper and continue to cook until juice is thickened and pears just begin to fall apart (about 5 minutes more). Set aside to let cool slightly, then serve over vanilla bean ice cream (which will melt perfectly from the compote).
